Brief about National Library :  
The National library foremost among the libraries in India ,is one of the four designated libraries entitled to receive under the Delivery Book and Newspapers(Public Libraries)Act 1954,a copy of every Publication published anywhere in the country .the Library is Permanent depository of all reading and printed materials produced in India or written by any foreigner wherever published and in whatever language .The National library of India is situated in Kolkata .is the largest library in India by Volume, and India’s Library of Public record . Its is Under the Ministry Of Culture , Govt. Of India .The Library is Designated to collect, Disseminate and preserve printed material produced in India . Know more: Click Here

History :
The history of National library began with the formation of the Calcutta Public Library in 1836. That was non- governmental institution and was run on a property basis people contributing (US$4.20) in subscription became the Proprietors .Lord Metcalfe the Governor at that time Transferred  4675 Vol. From the library of the College of Fort William, Calcutta to the Calcutta Public library.
The Calcutta Public Library had a unique position as the first public library in this part of the world. Such a well organized and efficiently run library was rare even in Europe during the first half of the 19th Century.
In 1954 accordance to Delivery of Books act every publishers have to submit 4 copy of their publication for growing up the collection of information of information source in library and to preserve it for upcoming generation. Each 4 copies goes in to respectively in
1 .Kolkata                  2.Tamilnadu,             3. Mumbai,                 4. Delhi.

The Imperial Library

The Imperial Library was formed in 1891 by combining a number of Secretariat libraries in Calcutta Amalgamation of CPL and Imperial Library :
in 1903 Lord Curzon of  Kedeston, the Viceroy of India, Conceived the idea of opening a library of the use of the public. He Noticed both the Libraries – Imperial Library and Calcutta Public library – were under utilized for the want of facilities of restrictions. He decided to amalgamate the rich collection of both these libraries.
The new amalgamated library, called Imperial Library was Formally opened to the public on 30 January 1903 at Metcalfe Hall Calcutta.

Declaring the Imperial Library to National library :     
After the independence the Government of India changed the name of the Imperial Library as the National Library and the collection was shifted from The Esplanade to the present Belvedere Estate. On 1Fab.1953 The National Library was opened to the public. It was opened to Public by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, and  B. S. Kesavan was appointed the First librarian of

Collection :
Library has separate Indian Language divisions for Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada Kashmiri, Malayalam Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. Sanskrit language divisions also collect and processes Pali and Praknt Books English books published in India are collect under DB Act.Know more Click Here

Rare Other collection :
The National Library has an impressive number of rare books and other reading materials. With the recommendations of the Review Committee, the present Rare Books Division started functioning as a separate division in December, 1973 under the charge of an Assistant Library & Information Officer after shifting of Rare Books Division to its new premises on Bhasha Bhavan Basement, National Library Kolkata from 1st February, 2013.
